About AFP JoCo
Americans for Prosperity is a national organization of grassroots leaders who engage citizens in the name of limited government and free markets on the local, state, and federal levels. The grassroots members of AFP advocate for public policies that champion the principles of entrepreneurship and fiscal and regulatory restraint.
The Oregon chapter of AFP focuses on issues of particular concern to Oregonians, and is committed to educating citizens about economic policy and mobilizing those citizens as advocates in the public policy process in Oregon.
The Josephine County sub-chapter has specific goals related to the critical issues we face today in our local community. Our high-level goal is to limit and curtail the power of local government bureaucracies.
Our action plan includes the following.
- Local Political Action:
- Monitor local political developments and make appropriate appearances where public comment is sought.
- Organize letter writing campaigns to elected representatives and the local media on significant issues.
- Education:
- Produce a public access TV series on issues of interest and concern to Americans for Prosperity in Oregon.
- Develop an outreach program to educate students on economic policy issues and the U.S. Constitution.
- Litigation:
- Engage in multiple independent lawsuits against Measure 49 in local courts.
- Appeal dismissals to U.S. District Court on the grounds that Measure 37 waivers are constitutionally protected both as contracts and property interests.
- Legislation:
- Draft and present initiatives for amendments to the Home Rule Charter in support of limiting local government, promoting free markets, and upholding private property rights.
Our current focus is on the following issues.
- Defeat Measure 49 and compel the county (and state) to honor lawfully granted Measure 37 waivers.
- Support the return to sustained yield timber harvests on the O&C lands.
- Limit fees required for regulatory compliance to actual, documented expenses incurrred by processing agencies.
- Eliminate the “any interested party” standing provisions in regulatory issues, which enable spurious litigation intended to discourage local development by making it prohibitively expensive.
- Oppose any new bureaucratic regulation.
